Add One-Click Unsubscribe for Bulk Email

Modern bulk-mail requirements increasingly expect more than a footer link. One-click unsubscribe gives mailbox providers a machine-readable opt-out path.

Required pieces

  • A visible unsubscribe link in the message body
  • A List-Unsubscribe header with a mailto or HTTPS endpoint
  • A List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click header for one-click flows

Implementation checklist

  1. Keep the normal footer unsubscribe link.
  2. Add a List-Unsubscribe header for the same list or audience.
  3. Add List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click when your endpoint supports it.
  4. Make sure the endpoint actually removes or suppresses the recipient quickly.

Common mistakes

  • Adding only the footer link
  • Pointing the header to a dead endpoint
  • Requiring login before unsubscribe
  • Mixing transactional mail with marketing unsubscribe behavior

If Gmail or Yahoo surface one-click warnings, treat them as sender-compliance work, not cosmetic cleanup.
